A Brief Introduction of SuzhouHealthCollege of Technology

Suzhou Health College of Technology has a long history. Its predecessor is Boxi Senior NurseSchool founded by American Christian Church. In 1951 after liberation, it was taken over by the people’s government and was named Sunan Suzhou NurseSchool. In 1952, Suzhou Xinmin PrivateSchool and Jiangding NurseSchool were incorporated into it, and was renamed Jiangsu Suzhou NurseSchool directly managed by the Provincial Health Department in 1953. In 1958, on the basis of NurseSchool, SuzhouMedicalProfessionalCollege was set up, with a nurse school attached to it. In 1981, it changed its name into Suzhou Health School of Jiangsu Province. In 1998, the affiliated Nurse School of No.1 People’s Hospital attached to the former SuzhouMedicalCollege was merged into the school; in 2000, the Second Health School of Suzhou was also merged into our school. It passed the assessment of provincial college placement council in2003 and was promoted as an advanced full-time college directly under Health Department of Jiangsu Province in the year of 2005.

The college has enrolled nearly 7000 full-time students. It has 2 campuses with an area of 626 mu and construction area of 197,000 square meters. The old campus is located in Shuyuan Lane in the old city area of Suzhou, while the new campus is in the northern part of SuzhouInternationalEducationPark.

The college takes in graduates of junior middle school for 5 years and graduates of senior middle school for 3 years. It has more than 10 specialties such as nursing, international nursing, medical laboratory technology, pharmacology, rehabilitation, medical nutrition, stomatology, eye technology, medical accountancy, medical information management, English/Nursing( double special courses) etc. which cover almost all allied health majors approved by Education Department. Among them, nursing is the key major approved by National Education Department, Health Department as well as Financial Department, and brand major of JiangsuProvince. Medical laboratory technology and pharmacology are provincial exemplary majors. According to different major basis, the college set up four departments of nursing, pharmacology, stomatology and base. The college not only undertakes daily work of provincial HealthTrainingCenter, but also functions as English NurseTrainingCenter assigned by Business Department.

The college has nearly 300 teachers ( with 8-10 foreign teachers of long-term), among which 30% of them are of advanced professional titles, about 60 teachers are graduates and doctors , about 70 of them are medical professionals as well as teachers, 4 teachers are experts employed by National Medicine Exam Center, nearly 50 teachers have been engaged in editing provincial programmed teaching materials, several teachers are backbones of developing national teaching schemes. More than 50 professional experts are hired as part-time teachers or professional advisors. Recently the college also makes research on provincial academic schemes and curriculum material.

The college has fine teaching facilities. The teaching buildings and lab buildings in the two campuses are well equipped. The college has won subsidy from Huaxia Foundation for stomatology, medical laboratory technology and nursing for 3 times in succession. The practice and training center, which include nursing simulated wards, stomatology labs, pharmacology simulated workshops and so on, are all of advanced level.

The college owns modern information technology equipments. It has 14 computer net rooms, 9 multi-media classrooms, 6 multi-media language labs, as well as an elaborate college information network connected to CHINANET and CERNET. Every classroom in Shihu Campus is equipped with multi-media and closed-circuit TV system. All these meet the needs of modern teaching and management. The library has 200,000 books, more than 1,000 kinds of Chinese and foreign language magazines, more than 3,000 electronic books, data base like CHKD, CNKI for disk index, and reading rooms which contain almost 2000 seats.

The college has advanced facilities for sports. Shihu campus has national second-level track and field while Shuyuan campus possesses sports ground, all kinds of courts as well as 2,000 meters’ multi-function sports center.

The college has several affiliated organizations. SuzhouHuaxiaStomatologyHospital, EyeHospital and Sanyuan Hotel ( 3 star hotel also for foreigners) not only bear relevant teaching task, but also provide service for people outside.

We have more than 40 stable clinical hospitals of third level to practice outside the college, more than 100 practice sites locate in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai etc. They provide very good environment for clinical interns and practice of all specialities.

For years, the college has formed good teaching management and student management standards. The college motto “Be genuine and pragmatic; be kind and virtuous” as well as its solid foundation has earned confirmation and praise of the society.

The college is very active in external communication, with finecorporation with relevant colleges and universities in Hong Kong area, the US, Australia, Holland etc. Groups of oversea specialists and experts visit the college to give lectures each year. The college has sent many teachers to the US, Japan, Denmark, Singapore, Australia etc. to examine or make an advanced study. It has had many items of corporation with these countries.

The high-qualified talents of health technology fostered by the college are widely popular in the society. Many excellent graduates have become professional backbones in the health profession. In the Nurse Professional Qualification Test organized by NationalMedicineExamCenter, the scores of nursing graduates rank stably in the first 10 places in our country. In recent 3 years, the employment rate keeps more than 98%. The majority of graduates will work in the southern part of JiangsuProvince whereas the excellent ones could be sent abroad.

The college has won many honors such as provincial and municipal “Civilized Unit”, “CivilizedCollege”, “Advanced Collective of Graduate Employment” and so on. The college is the director unit of National Health Vocational Education Committee, member unit of Education Director Committee of Education Department, a member of Standing Committee of National Health Colleges, Provincial Education Committee, and director unit of Provincial Health Vocational Education Research Office.

During the “Eleventh Five-Year” period, under the care and help of leaders and various circles of the society, the college will improve further to meet the needs of social economy, scientific culture development, and requirement of advanced vocational education, to become a national exemplary vocational technology college that is highly trusted by the society.
